Psychodynamic Counselling is one of the major traditions within contemporary therapy. My aim is to help you achieve insight, to explore difficulties and develop understanding around the reasons for your stressful or emotional feeling.
I’m an experienced psychodynamic counsellor and have worked for more than 14 years supporting adults and young people. I have completed 11 years post qualifications, developing my techniques and counselling skills further via Continuous Professional Development. Further learning has allowed me to raise low self esteem, deal with challenging behaviours, and use a number of interventions to aid and help individuals overcome emotional resistance, please see list below.
Background
Much of my current work is with children and young people calls for a common sense approach to language and work. I therefore avoid intellectualisation and jargon wherever possible.
I use skills learned from training and continuous development to assist the process, such as a sand tray used to look at fears and feelings, new perspectives and change.
Personally I have chosen not to specialise, but have a specific interest in mental health as a whole. I have two children and strive to learn and develop ways of keeping them safe both physically and emotionally. I endeavour also to achieve this for the young people I work with.
Many of the young people I have worked with report to have felt supported in a non-judgmental environment.
As a school counsellor I appreciate a child may not understand they are experiencing difficulties, they may be “sent” rather than making a choice to seek out therapeutic help. Whilst counselling is ultimately about the child or young person this needs to be considered within the therapeutic relationship.
I understand the first step seeking counselling is hard, if you have sought support, you may not know how to effect change it’s at this point we explore choices.
Adults and children alike, when issues arise, may feel stuck not knowing which life choices we should make? We may be frozen in unhelpful friendships in dead-end relationships, working situations and not have the tools or the energy to make changes.
Whilst exploring what’s going on for you we may look at your stressful or emotional feelings, helping you to see things more clearly, possibly from a different view-point. This can enable you to focus on feelings, experiences or behaviour, with a goal to facilitating positive change, working within a relationship of trust.
As a Christian I’m open to working with issues related to faith religion and spirituality, I am able to integrate these elements into my practice this can be an aid to personal and spiritual growth giving you the opportunity to have a holistic look at your life in a safe environment.
Whilst I am a Christian and my faith is dear to me, I work with people of faith I also respect those with no faith and their viewpoints.
